WATERSTONE RESIDENCE

CCY ARCHITECTS

TEAM: Alex Klumb, Jenny Trumble, Sean O'Bryant, and Anna Reynoso

The Waterstone guest house and party barn are located just outside of Woody Creek, CO. These two structures were designed to provide an entertainment space and host guests for overnight stays, an accessory to their primary residence. The project requirements included designing a full kitchen, master suite, bunk room, garage, integration with their airstream, and living room — and providing an unforgettable “Aspen” experience for their guests.

When entering the site, users drive over a cobblestone bridge stretched across two ponds shadowed by rolling mountains. The guest house and party barn form a strong linear form created by two 24 feet wide gables directed towards mountain views. Perpendicular to the main axis are voids created for movement; which is represented by material change. At one point this cuts through a landscape berm. This is intended to limit views of the guest house from the main house.

The guest house is designed to be a comfortable cozy place for guests to feel at home. This design is only 1,000 SF net livable area and uses creativity to utilize the limited space. The living room’s southern window frames the peaks with a cantilevered overhang.

The accessory structure is divided into two separate spaces (entertainment room and garage) which is connected by a dogtrot, for the airstream. The party is brought to this space by the indoor/outdoor bar. The entertainment room connects to the bocci ball court and the ponds seamlessly.

This sustainable structure will begin construction in the fall of 2021.
