Eglise Lodge is a 14,500 SF on-mountain restaurant at the Yellowstone Club near Big Sky, Montana. Program requirements included a 125 seat dining area with servery, a small bar, and a separate children’s dining area. The facility is designed to accommodate year-round special events and becomes the hub for mountain biking and outdoor activities in the summer..
The site is between two landscapes of very different scales: a subtle bowl to the south and Montana mountain peaks to the North and West. While sitting at a juncture between these two landscapes, the building incorporates large and small-scale project developments. This design is a singular expression to have a pavilion in the landscape. A strong horizontal element runs around the building, providing a quiet grounding datum. Above the datum, a folded roof plane opens to the mountains. The primary dining area and an outdoor room are under the folded roof. The horizontal band becomes a flat roof where a bar on the south and intimate seating areas on the north create an appealing ambience. The material selections also reflect a duality. The textural wood, which provides a tie to Montana heritage, is contrasted with the minimalism reflected in the plate steel siding.
This large-scale lodge project connects modern architectural techniques with a western feel at one of the world’s most prestigious ski resorts.
